Primary SourcesDocuments about Walter Danchak and his death were rather hard to come by. All that seems to be known about him is his date of death, that he earned a Silver Star, and that he was from Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. However, there were still some documents which aided me in my pursuit of more information about Walter Danchak.
Pretty much the only primary sources I came across were the documents sent to me by the Freedom of Information Act Office at Fort Knox, KY, and the oral history of G Company's actions on D-Day. The documents sent to me from Fort Knox contained information regarding Danchak's death on June 6th as well as the items he had with him when he died, where to ship these items to, and information regarding his burial. This information, while helpful and informative, did not help me single out the place and time at which Danchak was killed. The second primary source which proved to be helpful to me was Captain Joseph T. Dawson's account of G Company's actions throughout D-Day. His oral history gave me much insight into what G Company went through on June 6th. An excerpt of his oral history can be found on the website under the tab "G Company on D-Day." |
